About

We want to acknowledge your courage in taking the first step in finding out about weight loss surgery. Widely held misbeliefs about people with obesity have shrouded weight loss surgery with an atmosphere of failure and desperation.  Whilst weight loss surgery should be seen as the last resort, it is also the most effective treatment for people with morbid obesity.  It is now firmly established in most countries in the world, and there is a vast amount of reliable information available about most of the surgical procedures.  As with most operations, there have been many advances over the last 20 years, and weight loss surgery is now very safe when performed by experienced surgeons in well-established centres.

Meet the team

We believe we offer one of the most comprehensive, supportive bariatric surgery centres in New Zealand, offering various surgical options in the treatment of obesity. All procedures are primarily performed via a laparoscopic (keyhole) approach by our experienced and dedicated bariatric surgeons, Mr. David Schroeder, Mr. Rowan French and Mr Atul Dhabuwala.

David Schroeder
Bariatric Surgeon (Ham)

David Schroeder is an experienced laparoscopic abdominal surgeon who has been performing weight loss surgery in the Waikato area for 20+ years. He pioneered laparoscopic obesity surgery in New Zealand, introducing the gastric band in 1996, and performing the first laparoscopic gastric bypass in New Zealand in 2000. He has performed over 2500 primary and revisional obesity operations.

He is a member of several international obesity surgery societies, and is constantly updating surgical techniques and auditing outcomes. As a result, he has developed a keen interest in the role of the brain in getting the best results after surgery on the stomach. This is reflected in the team he has chosen to help patients achieve their goals.
